The PassNPlay Project started as an idea between myself and my partner Alfred when we realized the lack of fair opportunities for children in our communities to play sports. This comes from both our personal experiences when we were younger, being students in publicly funded elementary schools, as well as seeing those who are younger than us in less funded elementary schools. We decided that as high school students with privileged resources, we had to make an impact towards the youth so that everyone can reap the benefits of playing sports.

We first began by assembling a team of like-minded students who are also committed to impacting the lives of kids in our community by giving them the opportunity to play sports. Our team consists of students from Upper Canada College, Toronto French School, Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School, and Markville Secondary School.

Next, with the help of faculty staff in different schools, we held three-week-long “equipment drives” where students of these four schools were encouraged to bring in used sports equipment that was still in good condition. The drive was a huge success, with the collection of nearly 100 individual items of 8 different sports. Over the summer period, we cleaned and washed each item so that the children who receive this equipment will feel the condition to be as good as new. We are looking forward to continuing to run events and expanding to more schools in the GTA to realize our goal.
